Marc Swaffer, owner, restorer and racer of Austin A3 Classic Cars, approached me to build a brand behind Peggy, his beloved car that raced under the number 157. To begin with a line of retro styled racing polo shirts, the creative strategy is to look at developing assets that correspond with Peggy and the sport of classic car racing.
• Using imagery such as Peggy's number plate, the steering wheel and gear stick, I developed lockups that mimic car badges to be replicated as embroidery or added to woven pips and sew-in labels.
• Following retro colour palettes, I investigated shapes and fonts as well as the number of different ways that '157' can be written as a combination of words and numbers.
• Using inspiration from classic retro mens styling, I developed initial ideas using stripes and colour blocks.
• Researching high end polo shirt retailers, I designed examples that highlight the small detail finishes that can bring this range to life including matching colour collars, matching buttons, shoulder darts, front and back detail, piping and double layer cut corner collars.
